Netflix’s first Korean original animated film finally has a release date, and it’s coming soon! The official announcement was cross-posted across Netflix’s official accounts last April 29, accompanied by a poster and teaser trailer. Set to release on May 30, Lost in Starlight has gathered plenty of positive attention since its reveal. This includes Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, who described the feature as a “visual masterpiece (that) takes you around the universe.”

Lost in Starlight is co-written and directed by Han Ji-won, most known for her visually refreshing animated films, The Sea on the Day When the Magic Returns and The Summer. In addition, Kang Hyun-joo lent her time as the other half of the writer duo, along with the production assistance of Climax Studio.
During a recent film showcase in Tokyo hosted by Netflix, the director expressed her sincere wish for more Korean original animated films after their movie. With Korean animations increasing in popularity in 2025, we’re excited to see how the industry will continue to grow in the next few years.
Lost in Starlight: An Astronomical Plot
A one-of-a-kind story that takes long-distance relationships to the next level—or galaxy? Lost in Starlight follows the lives of an astronaut and musician as they deal with a distance that extends beyond Earth’s boundaries. It promises a poignant tale of unconditional love and boundless dreams through Nan-young and Jay.
The official teaser introduces us to a “near-future version” of 2050 Seoul—familiar if not for the abundance of holographic displays scattered throughout the city. It then shows our leads bumping into one another as the film’s soulful soundtrack amplifies this pivotal scene. Though romance blooms between the two, our excitement stills as Nan-young’s voice interrupts a montage of their happy moments together—she’ll be flying off to space soon.
Yet, that doesn’t seem to mark the end of their story. Despite being physically separated, they attempt to persevere through the uncertainties, leaving the audience with anticipation as the trailer ends with an emotional reminder by our female protagonist to her other half, “Never forget, Jay. Somewhere in this universe, there is someone always supporting you.”
Star-crossed Leads: Main Voice Actors and Characters
With a stellar plot, it’s only fitting for iconic stars to lend their voices to Lost in Starlight. First revealed in 2023, Netflix confirmed the film’s production, including its lead voice actors, Kim Tae-ri and Hong Kyung. Having already worked together in the hit thriller series Revenant, there’s much to anticipate about their chemistry in the romance department.

Kim Tae-ri transforms into Nan-young, an astronaut/scientist with dreams of exploring Mars to unearth traces of her fellow astronaut mother, who disappeared during a mission. After being chosen as one of the representatives traveling to the Red Planet, she meets Jay at the most unexpected time.
Opposite Nan-young, we have Jay, who’s voiced by Hong Kyung. He’s a musician with broken dreams who works as a repair technician for retro instruments. Their paths cross when Nan-young goes out to find someone capable of fixing her mother’s old turntable—hopefully, it’ll still play after falling to the ground during their first meeting. While Nan-young goes to space, the trailer reveals a glimpse of him longingly waiting for her to come home.
Crossing the Universe for the Release Details
These teasers shower us with more questions, fueling our curiosity about the film. Would love be enough to withstand the millions of miles that stand between them? Will they be able to reunite? One thing’s for sure, we’ll know the answers on May 30.

Mark your calendars! Lost in Starlight is releasing exclusively on Netflix.
