Background
GOT7 were formed under JYP Entertainment, debuting on January 16, 2014, with their debut track, “Girls, Girls, Girls.” The prominent 3rd generation boy group consists of seven members: Jay B, Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam and Yugyeom. They were JYPE’s first boy group to debut after the success of GOT7’s sunbae group, 2PM. Prior to the group forming, members Jay B and Jinyoung debuted as a duo entitled JJ Project in 2012, under the stage names JB and Junior, respectively.
The multilingual group had a strong international appeal from the start, with members hailing from South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong and the USA. Their first EP, ‘Got It?’ peaked at number two on the Gaon Album Chart and number one on Billboard’s World Albums Chart.
The group went on to have a fruitful and successful career under JYP Entertainment; however, in January 2021, all members departed from the label upon the expiration of their contracts with the agency. The members not only wished to pursue their solo activities freely but also wanted more autonomy over their artistry, scheduling, and music production. The group is now mostly independent since leaving JYPE; however, some of their group activities have been managed by Warner Music Korea over the years since their split with JYP. The group’s leader, Jay B, fought to transfer their group name and all music rights from JYP Entertainment to the members themselves. For their solo activities, the individual members are signed under various different agencies, depending on the direction of their pursuits.
