Japanese girl group, XG released their highly anticipated, first extended play, ‘NEW DNA’ this past Wednesday, September 27th. Alongside their album release, they also released the music video for the track, “PUPPET SHOW.”
In this mini-album, XG sets out to declare that they are a “new species” free from traditional norms and restrictions. Featuring pre-released singles, “GRL GVNG,” “TGIF,” and “NEW DANCE,” this record also features an intro, “HESONOO,” rap track “X-GENE,” and the aforementioned, “PUPPET SHOW”.
XG is well known for their over-the-top and experimental styling and visuals, especially in their music videos. “PUPPET SHOW” is no exception to this, as the viewer follows the group while they navigate a cult-like ritual to reach a structure above the clouds. Previously, they also released high-concept music videos for “GRL GVNG” and “TGIF”.
XG has proven to be a breath of fresh air in the K-pop music scene. From their all-English singles in various genres to their over-the-top and experimental styling and visuals, it’s no wonder this group has amassed global success. Formed by music producer JAKOPS, XG debuted in 2022 with “Tippy Toes” to lukewarm reception, followed by “Mascara”.
It wasn’t until their rap cypher, featuring the group’s rap line (Cocona, Maya, Harvey, and Jurin), went viral that the group started to gain traction. Cocona’s verse alone amassed over 10 million views on TikTok. Following up on this viral moment, the group released singles “SHOOTING STAR” and “LEFT RIGHT” this year, both of which were met with an overwhelming response. They went on to perform at 88rising’s Head in the Clouds festival in New York and Los Angeles.
