People frequently associate J-Pop with vintage anime openings, but the genre has a wider range of sounds. Every group portrays J-Pop differently, which makes it distinctive to their group. Style, images, settings, and of course, music and lyrics all embrace their Japanese culture. Check out some J-pop groups bringing their own style and flair to the genre.
JO1
Debuting in 2020 under LAPONE Entertainment, this 11-member group comprises Sho, Ruki, Takumi, Ren, Sky, Keigo, Shosei, Junki, Syoya, Shion, and Mame. As one of J-pop’s front-running boy groups, the group released the album ‘BE CLASSIC’ in March to commemorate their fifth anniversary. This collection of old and new songs features the widely popular track, “Love Seeker,” for their fans (called JAMS) to enjoy. In their rise to global stardom, the band, which usually sings in Japanese, has incorporated English into their discography with an English version of “BE CLASSIC.” Recently, JO1 released a special edition of their single ‘Handz In My Pocket,” featuring an English version.
Under XGALX Labels, a subsidiary of AVEX Entertainment, XG, consisting of Jurin, Chisa, Juria, Hinata, Harvey, Cocona, and Maya, debuted on March 18, 2022. These girls have risen rapidly with their Coachella debut, consistent hit tracks and virality. Not only are they popular in Japan, but they’ve also captured the hearts of fans globally with their quirky and unique concepts. XG’s music reflects girl power, confidence, and love for each other and their fans, ALPHAZ. In 2026, the girls will set off on their second world tour, marking another significant milestone for the group!
EJ, Fuma, K, Nicholas, Jo, Yuma, Harua, Taki, and Maki debuted as &TEAM under YX Labels on November 21, 2022. In a few years, the group has built a distinct sound, a fusion of dreamy, funky, and edgy nostalgic sounds. Their debut song, “Under the Skin,” is most notably their most popular song, starting their careers off strong. Although their releases are primarily in Japanese with English lyrics, the group will officially step into the Korean market on Oct. 28 with the mini-album ‘Back to Life.’ With every EP or album, they showcase various sounds with no song similar to the last.
BE:FIRST debuted under BMSG on November 21, 2021. The seven-member group consists of Junon, Leo, Ryoki, Sota, Manato, Shunto, and Ryuhei. This versatile band has a catalog of songs that play into a variety of genres, from the classic J-pop sound to rap and R&B. They stay true to that refreshing pop sound with the occasional differing genre fusion within certain tracks. On Oct. 29, the group plans to release an anthology album highlighting their best tracks titled ‘BE:ST” in honor of their fourth anniversary.
Masaya, Hiroto, Fengfan, Shogo, Hiromu, Takeru, Takumi, Kyosuke, Yudai, Rihito, and Jin under Lapone Entertainment, debut on November 3, 2021, as INI. Their sound is influenced by hip-hop, dance, rock, and pop; therefore, their diverse discography will keep you entertained. In June 2025, the group released the album ‘THE ORIGIN,’ starring the hip-hop-heavy title track DOMINANCE. This song is a perfect example of INI’s sound and what they’re capable of.
Debuting on April 17, 2024, under Lapone Entertainment, Momona, Ran, Miu, Shizuku, Ayane, Keiko, Kokona, Rinon, Suzu, Cocoro, and Tsuzumi have already claimed their spot as a popular girl group in J-Pop. ME:I’s sound is the classic refreshing girly pop sound, the kind of vibe that leaves the listener feeling happy and energized. While it’s only been a little over a year since they debuted, they have a clear sound when it comes to their music: laid-back, danceable , fresh and positive, which is reflected much more in their recent release “THIS IS ME:I” from their first album.
Mako, Rio, Maya, Riku, Ayaka, Mayuka, Rima, Miihi, and Nina make up NiziU under JYP Entertainment Japan. The 9-member group debuted back on December 2, 2020. While they are a Japanese group and sing primarily in Japanese and English, they’ve released Korean tracks like “LOVE LINE,” a mellow vibe just like their most popular song, “Make you happy.” This group is for listeners who like the simple, easy-listening girl-next-door vibe.
