Cignature ended the summer with their youthful EP, ‘Us in the Summer.’ Currently promoting as a six-member group while Belle participates in SBS’ Universe Ticket, Jeewon, Semi, Chaesol, Seline, Chloe, and Dohee expressed their satisfaction with their latest release, considering it more emotional than their previous work. During our roundtable interview with Cignature, we delved into the creative process behind their EP and the group’s progression, gaining valuable insights into their journey.
‘Us in the Summer’ includes the title track “안녕, 인사해 (Smooth Sailing),” a rhythmic and groovy summer song with elements reminiscent of city pop. The song holds a truly memorable sound, particularly evident in the infectious chorus and the clever incorporation of ‘la la las’ in the pre-chorus. We couldn’t help but ask the group about the creative approach behind this lively track and their 3 additional songs on the EP.
“How did you approach the creative process differently for this release, and how do you feel like these emotions came through in your music?”
“For this album, instead of adopting a new approach, we focused on getting the emotions just right by engaging in extensive discussions among the members. Personally, I prepared for it by immersing myself in movies and books that could help evoke memories from the past.” – Chaesol
“The lyrics also changed several times.” – Seline
“Yes, the lyrics changed several times during the process.” – Chaesol
“We chose the right lyrics that would suit the song.” – Seline
” Through the process, we managed to steer the song in a better direction.”- Chaesol
“I also want to add to that. Compared to other albums, in this album, we tried to convey different types of emotions so every time we went in and recorded the songs we tried to bring out the best mood of the song. Compared to “PALACE”, “VILLAIN” or “Climax” which are very fun and fast-paced, for this one, “Sorry So Sorry” we had to keep it down. For “Little Me” we had to express our inner self and inner emotions, and for “Smooth Sailing” it was like a shy girl, we had to express that kind of vibe. “Mess With My Mind”, is like talking to a friend about the hardship of love so I think that is the most different part while preparing for this album.” – Chloe
As the members noted the difference, we asked how this comeback showcases the group’s artistic growth. Due to the groups’ pride in this comeback, we wanted to know why this EP in particular is a stand-out release in their discography.
“As a group, how do you think cignature has evolved since your last release, and what makes ‘Us in the Summer’ stand out in your discography?”
“During this release, I believe we’ve developed a deeper understanding of each other. Now, just by looking into each other’s eyes, we can sense what the others want. We’ve also become more supportive and empowering, even when there are a few shortcomings. The moments when we can uplift each other on stage are when I truly feel our growth as a group.” – Jeewon
