Exactly one year after the release of their 12th mini album ‘The Piece Of 9,’ SF9 has finally made a long-awaited comeback with a new album ‘Sequence’ on January 8.
This album is significant to the team not only because it marks the group’s new beginning as an octet after the departure of Rowoon in September last year, but it is also their first album after leader Youngbin and Inseong rejoined the team after completing their mandatory military service. The return of the main rapper and main vocalist made expectations run high among Fantasy (their fandom) before the release of this album despite the absence of Jaeyoon due to military service.
An Album Depicting The Start And End Of Love With Diverse Sounds
‘Sequence’ consists of a total of six tracks of different genres, including title track “BIBORA”, “Strings”, “Morning Coffee”, Midnight Sun”, “Domino” and lead vocalist Dawon’s first solo song “Superconductor”, which demonstrates SF9’s wide musical spectrum. All the tracks center around the theme of love and separation, portraying the purity of love and the pain of separation. The album carries the core message of hoping to be with the same person even though knowing that they will break up in the end.
The title track “BIBORA”, which is a Korean term that describes “rain with heavy wind”, is a deep house genre dance track. Despite the dynamic and upbeat melody, the lyrics of this song vividly illustrate the complex feeling of wanting to forget about the pain of breaking up, while at the same time hoping to return to the past, singing that they hope to be swept back to their lovers with the rain and wind.
Showcasing Outstanding Acting Skills
Several SF9 members such as Inseong, Zuho, Dawon, and Chani have previously demonstrated their potential to become actors by starring in drama series. In the “BIBORA” music video, all the members showcase their acting, where they express their loneliness and sorrow after breaking up in different places. The members’ acting together with the cinematic visual effects and transitions give a cinematic flair to the music video.
Many Fantasy commented that they were impressed by the members’ outstanding acting skills, saying that their facial expressions are very on-point. The members even dance to the intense choreography under the rain towards the end, matching the song’s title.
Engaging In The Album Making Process
Apart from acting, SF9 members also demonstrate their musical talents by participating actively in the making process of this album. The three rappers of the group, Youngbin, Zuho, and Hwiyoung, continued to participate in the lyric-making of most of the tracks including “BIBORA”.
Zuho, who has been the “in-house music producer” of SF9 since their debut, even participated in the composition of “Midnight Sun”, which is a comforting mid-tempo track that expresses the members’ eternal love and support for Fantasy.
Meanwhile, Dawon participated in both lyrics and composition for “Superconductor”. This English song describes the magical and thrilling feeling of falling in love and highlights Dawon’s unique and refreshing vocals.
In celebration of SF9’s long-awaited comeback, the group is holding a pop-up event in the Everline store at The Hyundai Seoul in Yeouido and a pop-up cafe in collaboration with Soundwave in Hapjeong starting from January 9. Fantasy can win random photo cards of the members by purchasing ‘Sequence’ in the store and cafe, and enjoy beverages named after the members and snacks in the cafe to receive special photo cards and postcards.
