K-pop solo artist Sunmi has come back with the release of her digital single “Balloon in Love”. Sunmi, a former member of the trailblazing second-generation girl group Wonder Girls, is famous for her superb dance skills, as well as her vocals and performance skills. The singer debuted as a soloist in 2013 with the extended play ‘Full Moon’ and has since released a flurry of hit singles and extended plays such as ‘Gashina’ and “Pporappippam”. “Balloon in Love” is Sunmi’s 11th digital single.
This newest single, “Balloon in Love”, was released on June 13, 2024. The song was written, arranged, composed, and produced by Sunmi herself, who metaphors herself and falls in love with a balloon. The lyrics suggest that the love between Sunmi and her love interest can “blow up” or pop like a balloon. In this way, the love from the love interest is like the breaths needed to blow up the balloon, which is Sunmi, and she implores them to keep “blow more on [her] side”. To further the comparison of herself and a balloon, she states that her lover is the only person who could “take [her] to the sky”. The song is an indie rock song, with a whimsical and dreamy sound and soft vocals. “Balloon in Love” is her first release in eight months since the release of the single “Stranger” in October 2023.
