After three years away from the musical scene, soloist and actor Park Jihoon has returned with his first single album, ‘RE:FLECT.’ Released on April 29, the album comes following the highly anticipated reunion of the singer’s former group, WANNA ONE. As Jihoon dives back into his musical career, he leaves audiences with a mellow yet vibrant album, complete with three tracks that are the perfect supplement for the chill summer days ahead.

“Bodyelse”

The album begins with the title track, “Bodyelse,” setting an upbeat but still calming environment, perfect for relaxing by the beach. With a satisfying buildup that leads to a catchy chorus, Jihoon sings about not being able to stop thinking about his love interest and coming to the conclusion that he has fallen in love. Towards the end of the chorus, he voices his wonder about whether the other person feels the same way.

The imagery of the music video adds a nostalgic aspect to the song, featuring a warm and soft gradient and footage reminiscent of an old digital camera. Throughout the video, Jihoon is constantly seen running, creating a hurried and confused atmosphere that is further emphasized by the constant motion of his doppelgangers. In one particular scene, Jihoon observes as his copies run around in a circle, a scene that seems to speak to the chaotic state of mind before coming to the realization of being in love.

“Watercolor”

“Watercolor” takes listeners even deeper into the waves of calm, with a laid-back instrumental complemented by snaps and high notes. The song speaks to the feeling of having a love interest enter your life and how they can add color to the black and white. The specification of watercolor and not just paint evokes this imagery of water that was also conveyed in the concept photos for this album. As the love interest “drops” into their life, they cause a ripple effect that allows color to easily disperse throughout. Additionally, the repetition of “drowning in your love” and “sinking into you” cements this visual connection between love and water.

“I can’t hold your hand anymore”

Closing out the album, “I can’t hold your hand anymore” leans into a more guitar and piano-heavy instrumental with a chorus that highlights Jihoon’s vocals. It provides a bittersweet message as Jihoon sings about a relationship that has long since ended. However, though the two have drifted apart, he still thinks of his love interest and notes how their memories together won’t ever disappear even with time. He laments not being able to be with them, in both a physical and emotional sense, but still holding a place for them in his heart.

With this final track, the theme of progression throughout the album becomes clear, going from the joy of being in love but not yet sure if your feelings are reciprocated, followed by a life made more colorful by their love, and ending with those happy moments becoming a past memory as you grow apart. The album is a reflection of the love cycle, an acknowledgement of love’s ability to bring great happiness but also sorrow. With its complex meanings and chill sound, this album makes for the perfect track to ponder on while you relax by the water this summer.
