MEOVV, the rookie powerhouse from THEBLACKLABEL, returns with their first EP, ‘MY EYES OPEN VVIDE’, following the explosive success of their pre-release single “HANDS UP”. After strong momentum from their debut single “MEOW” and second single “TOXIC”, the rising quintet expands into a deeper and wider world of music with a sonic and visual identity that sets them apart in today’s saturated K-pop landscape.
With contributions from members Gawon and Narin on several tracks, the EP is a unified narrative that unveils their inner world and artistic identity. With this EP, MEOVV chooses possibility over fear.
“HANDS UP”
Opening the album with full force, “HANDS UP” is a Brazilian funk track that showcases MEOVV’s unique identity through fast-paced, dazzling rhythms and synths. The track celebrates resilience and liberation, urging us to shed hesitation and break free from limitations. As the chorus shouts “Crack the sky open, put your hands up”, we’re invited to shake off our doubt and rise.
The lyrics reflect their unflinching confidence, “Provocation ain’t nothing new to me”. A dynamic dance break at the end, reminiscent of classic YG finales, amplifies the performance energy. Built with a full structure of verses, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, and outro, the track stands tall in today’s era of abbreviated songs.
“DROP TOP”
As the first EP’s title track, “DROP TOP” is a dreamy, synth-led escape about embracing youth despite uncertainty. Written by Gawon, the pop track is layered with rock elements. It starts gently with soft piano chords and angelic vocals, slowly building tension with finger snaps and light bass. The pre-chorus swells “Can you feel the noise we shout?”, and when the drums hit, the track explodes into an anthemic, empowering ride.
Adding depth to the song’s message of embracing life from your own perspective, the convertible imagery represents freedom, openness and surrendering to life’s unpredictability. MEOVV encourages us to move forward, even when the road is unclear. The lyric “Just live your life” becomes a refrain and a mindset.
“MEOW”
Sassy, slick, and stylish, “MEOW” pounces with unapologetic swagger. As MEOVV’s debut single, it introduces the group with booming confidence and attitude. With hip-hop rhythms, trap textures, rich bass, and addictive melodies, it immediately grabs attention. The group seamlessly switches between fierce rap flows and alluring vocals, establishing a strong presence.
More than just a catchy hook and a simple onomatopoeia, “MEOW” symbolizes MEOVV’s signature sound. The music video emphasizes this with the girls rocking high-fashion looks and powerful choreography that prioritizes personality over plot to connect directly with each member. “BODY”
Originally part of their double title release with “TOXIC”, “BODY” pumps through with energy and self-assuredness. Featuring powerful chanting and an addictive chorus, it pulses with intensity and ambition. The repetitive chorus drives home the song’s message: MEOVV is ready for more, and they’re coming in strong.
The performance video captures this spirit—a free-spirited, spontaneous scene with the group and their dancers creating a shared, electrified moment. “BODY” embraces the idea that being prepared also means being fearless in showing your true self.
“TOXIC”
Heavy in its emotional depth, “TOXIC” strips back the bravado for a haunting all-English ballad that peels back MEOVV’s tough exterior. Co-written by Gawon and Narin, this pop R&B track features minimal production and aching falsettos, capturing the heartbreak of a toxic love or a dangerous whirlpool of emotions that’s impossible to let go.
The lyrics are honest and delicate, reflecting a heart caught in emotional quicksand. The vulnerability is raw but never fragile. MEOVV expresses pain with grace, turning emotional scars into something beautiful.
“LIT RIGHT NOW”
Rounding out the EP, “LIT RIGHT NOW” offers a groovy, relaxed finish. The rhythmic R&B beat with jazzy drums and funky basslines allows the group’s signature deep vocals to shine. This song nods to late ’90s and early 2000s soul-pop, evoking a cozy, after-hours vibe.
Unlike the explosive energy of earlier tracks, “LIT RIGHT NOW” offers space to breathe, unwind, and simply vibe. It tells a story of expressing oneself in a way that is uniquely MEOVV’s, unbothered by others’ standards or gazes. This soulful exhale leaves us intrigued and wanting more.
