EXO DEFENDS THE CROWN WITH LONG-AWAITED FULL ALBUM ‘REVERXE’

Third-generation K-pop legends EXO are back with their eighth full-length album, ‘REVERXE.’ It’s been nearly three years since their last group release, and they’re making a huge entrance with their new lead single, “Crown.” You’ll hear SUHO, CHANYEOL, D.O., KAI and SEHUN on this release, plus LAY is back for the first time since 2018! However, because of ongoing legal issues, XIUMIN, BAEKHYUN and CHEN are not part of this specific comeback.

‘REVERXE’ follows the group’s 2023 full-length release ‘EXIST,’ which was their seventh album to sell over a million copies. As always, the record was a huge success and was praised by music critics for its “vocal depth, range, and maturity.”

Since debuting in 2012, EXO’s uniquely crafted sci-fi universe has always stood out from the others. While newer groups today have self-defined identities, EXO is iconic for its foundational concept-driven lore. Their immersive long-form storytelling and worldbuilding, where each member possesses a distinct supernatural power representing a specific element or ability, creates loyalty among fans. But the group is also well-known for delivering some of the best vocals and most outstanding performances in the industry. Not to mention, they have one of K-pop’s most established and impressive discographies.

The Return of the Kings

For this new chapter, EXO returns to their universe with nine new tracks and puts a new spin on the word “reverse.” To them, it means a reset, where a new world is opening up for them and EXO-Ls to explore again.

Leading up to the release of the new album, the band dropped two pre-album singles. An “EXO-classic” winter ballad, “I’m Home,” which they performed at their special fan meeting, as well as a first reveal of “Back It Up” at the 2025 Melon Music Awards.

“Crown”

The title track “Crown” is an intense dance song that mixes heavy metal guitar riffs, Atlanta trap drums, and EDM synths. With each member’s signature dramatic vocals, they sing about a loved one who’s like a precious crown that must be protected at all costs, which is fitting, since they’re called the Kings of K-pop for a reason. The music video uses sharp choreography and hidden symbols to reward longtime fans for following their story since the beginning.

A Look Inside the B-sides

The rest of the album keeps that energy going with one banger after another. “Back It Up” shows how easily EXO can pull off experimental sounds and heavy 808 bass while switching beats. On the track “Crazy,” they mix electronic pop with Brazilian funk rhythms on top of a running BPM that quickens during the last chorus, taking listeners even deeper into their musical universe.

The mood gets less intense towards the middle of the album with “Suffocate,” a breakup banger that blends smoky vocals with a steady house beat. For those who love a cinematic feel, “Moonlight Shadows” is a must-listen. It’s a total highlight where the group settles into a laid-back R&B groove, giving every member a chance to show off their softer side and relaxed tones, while it also captures a romantic moment between two people under the moon.

Following “Moonlight Shadows” comes the smooth R&B vibe of “Back Pocket,” which uses funky bass and guitar riffs to build a sense of desire. They get playful on “Touch & Go,” comparing falling in love to a row of toppling dominoes, and even master pop-rock on “Flatline,” proving they can handle any genre. Finally, they bring things to a gentle close with the sentimental ballad “I’m Home.” When they sing about finding their way back to us, it’s hard not to feel that wave of comfort that only comes when your favorite group finally returns from a long break.

A New Chapter with the Same Iconic Identity

With this new release, the veteran group shows they are intentional and confident in where their craft stands now. They’ve hit that sweet spot where the music feels like the familiar EXO we love, but with new sounds that never feel dated. However, because of ongoing legal issues, XIUMIN, BAEKHYUN, and CHEN are not part of this specific comeback.
