On April 29th, girl group IVE released their 2nd EP ‘IVE SWITCH’, with six songs and a music video for one of its title tracks, “HEYA”. “HEYA” is followed by the second title track, “Accendio”, which is succeeded by “Blue Heart”, “Ice Queen”, “WOW”, and “RESET”. Change is the theme of the album, hence the name ‘IVE SWITCH’.
“HEYA”
“HEYA” continues IVE’s hip-hop sound from their previous release “Baddie”, and true to the mini album’s name, it contains a switch-up at the song’s bridge. The song is a rap track inspired by a Korean folktale created by IVE called The Tiger Who Loved the Sun. In this folktale, the IVE members represent tigers, a significant and popular figure in Korean culture, who love the sun and want to eat it to be filled with its light. The song itself and the accompanying music video are meant to showcase the beauty of Korean culture.
“Accendio”
“Accendio” is a dark and enchanting synth track with lyrics about magic and spellbound love.
“Blue Heart”, “Ice Queen”, “WOW”, and “RESET”
The first B-sides, “Blue Heart”, was written by member Jang Wonyoung, inspired by her experiences as a female idol. The lyrics of “Blue Heart” show a type of empowerment by developing a cold “blue heart” instead of a warm red one, which allows the hate and hyper-scrutiny female idols face to roll off their backs instead of letting it affect them. “Ice Queen” follows up on this, describing a feeling of isolation and coldness as an “ice queen” and being curious whether someone can melt their frozen heart. The next song, “WOW,” expresses surprise towards being attracted to somebody the complete opposite of oneself. “WOW” stands out against the rest of the mini album as an upbeat pop track in contrast to the other dark-sounding tracks. Finally, “RESET,” still a comparatively lighter track than the first four songs of ‘IVE SWITCH’, is a break-up song where the narrator “resets” after cutting ties with their now-ex-partner.
