“Free Falling”
The title track of the album takes on an experimental sound that integrates both jazz and Bossa Nova. Among the heartfelt lyrics and falling imagery, KANGMIN encapsulates the out-of-control feeling of being in love, only needing the reassurance that their love interest loves them as well to tether them through the chaos and uncertainty. This theme is further emphasized through the byline on the album’s cover, “Just say you still love me,” which is also repeated throughout the song’s chorus.
“Intro : small, fragile and still here”
Continuing the jazzy sound, the second track on the album takes a more R&B direction and acts much like an interlude with its short length and interspersions of narrative dialogue. Through both lyrics and speech, KANGMIN draws a comparison to a fading star in the darkness of the night sky, illustrating a desire to exist and keep burning despite being in a fragile state. The overall message here is wanting to hold onto hope, which is further emphasized by the song fading into a Morse code translation of the word “hope.”
“in the mirror”
KANGMIN ends his album with a more synth-pop sound, complete with a catchy chorus and heartfelt bridge. He sings about being scared and uncertain and just wanting to be able to accept and exist as himself, to embrace the man that he sees in the mirror. As the album ends with this motif of the mirror, KANGMIN wraps up his first reflection of who he is and how he wants to grow as an artist.
