6 months after NMIXX released their third single album ‘A Midsummer NMIXX’s Dream,’ NMIXX is back with their second mini album ‘Fe3O4: Break’ released on January 15. The album immediately clinched top positions on iTunes’ top songs charts in a total of 13 countries including Chile, Indonesia, Turkey, and more, proving the sextet’s status as one of the most promising 4th-gen monster rookie girl groups.
One-of-a-kind album title
If you are not familiar with chemical formulas, you may be confused by the title of this album. “Fe3O4” is the chemical formula of magnetite, which is a magnetic mineral. The album is a continuation of the group’s ongoing fictional universe story that first began in their debut mini album ‘Ad Mare’ in 2022, where the members are embarking on a journey towards “mixxtopia”, a utopia where all dreams and wishes will come true while discovering unity through understanding each other.
“Fe3O4” is a story that centers around girls who possess the ability to attract others magnetically, which implies NMIXX’s hope to attract their listeners to their new music. While “BREAK” symbolizes the group’s determination to shatter barriers and stereotypes that the world imposes on them.
Taking “Mixx-pop” to the next level
NMIXX has been known for their self-coined “Mixx-pop” genre since their debut, which means mixing two or more genres into one track. While their previous title track “Party O’Clock” showcases a freewheeling side of the genre, the new title track “DASH” demonstrates a powerful side of “Mixx-pop” by incorporating old-school hip-hop and pop-punk genres, creating a new type of “Mixx-pop”.
According to the group’s main vocalist Lily, the 2000s-inspired R&B melody together with the constantly changing pace and melody of the song, which is a signature feature of “Mixx-pop”, make the song refreshing to listen to.
During the press conference, the members also revealed that all of them loved the track when they first heard the demo, adding that they were already confident about the song at the moment they listened to it.
Not only did the NMIXX express their fondness for “DASH”, but the song was also well-received among NSWER (their fandom) and K-pop fans alike globally. Many commented that the song sounded good, and praised the members’ outstanding singing skills and courage in attempting different music genres. Some even thought that this was the best title track in NMIXX’s discography, showing their recognition and support for the group.
Showcasing top-notch singing and dancing skills
NMIXX has been constantly proving their first-class vocal and dancing skills in every comeback, this time is no exception. Before the official release of the album, NMIXX dropped a music video and performance video for the pre-release track “Soñar (Breaker)” and another B-side track “Run For Roses” respectively. The members’ outstanding singing and dancing skills drew the attention of global audiences and made NSWER (their fandom) already excited for their comeback weeks before the date of the album release.
Moreover, same as what they did for their first mini album ‘expérgo’, NMIXX blessed the ears of fans with their amazing vocal harmonization by releasing an acapella version of the album’s highlight medley alongside the normal version. The members even performed an a capella version of “Soñar (Breaker)” for the press conference attendees, proving their live singing ability.
High-quality B-side tracks with diverse colors
Apart from “DASH”, “Soñar (Breaker)” and “Run For Roses”, the new album includes four other songs including “Boom”, “Passionfruit”, “XOXO”, and “Break The Wall”. Notably, Young K of DAY6, NMIXX’s fellow JYP labelmate, participated in the lyric-making of “Run For Roses”.
While all seven tracks are of different genres, all of them fall under the common theme of the members overcoming challenges together on the way to pursuing their dreams, fully demonstrating NMIXX’s versatile and limitless musicality as well as their unbeatable teamwork.
