Minna Seo—the up-and-coming Jazz artist, has delivered her debut single “A Lovers’ Waltz” to us back in January. The gentle sounds of familiar Jazz instruments supporting Minna Seo’s velvety vocals in this comforting track captured our attention at first listen. She’s bound to become one of our new favorite artists, and hopefully yours too, we at POP TOKKI got the opportunity to speak with Minna Seo about Jazz, debuting, and more!
“Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind your debut single, ‘A Lovers’ Waltz’? How did the concept for the Jazz-inspired song come about?”
“I’ve been wanting to put my song out for a while, and I wasn’t sure what kind of song would project myself in the way I wanted, especially as a first single to release. I’ve always had love for jazz and the feeling it has in it, so I decided to compose this heart-warming mellow tune. I think I’m happy with the vibe the song gives. “
Minna
“What Intruiges you most about the Jazz genre?”
“I love that feeling I get from listening to standard pieces, how they’re mostly composed before the 50’s and yet manage to be classy and fun, with still to this day mind-blowing melodies and sophisticated lyrics. I love how when I sing it, it just carries me away and gives peace and some kind of ease, even.”
Minna
“Are there any famous Jazz artists that inspire you?”
“I was completely thrown away watching Natalie Cole’s ‘Unforgettable’ live videos and they have amazed me. The power in her voice and the joy it gives, and how much she seems to enjoy performing on stage really inspired me. Besides, there are so many more artists that I love and wish to be like one day.”
Minna
“What message are you hoping to convey with your debut single? How is this an introduction to new fans?”
“It actually took some while for me to be ready for this one because I thought it would never be good enough. When I finally decided to release, I really hoped to continue working on the rest of my music and reach out to more people, starting from this one. I’m looking forward to making more songs for people to love and be a part of.”
Minna
“What are some of your musical influences, and how do they contribute to the development of your own artistic identity?
“I grew up being close with many different types of music, starting from the classics, pop, kpop ect. I never really stuck to one thing, I just loved singing what sounded good to me and that really became my passion over the years. Therefore, I don’t set boundaries and am open to trying all sorts of music and not just jazz.”
Minna
“You’ve worked with Woshi and BTS’ V, are there any other artists you would love to team up with?”
“I’d love to make music with different artists in the future and a collab has always been something I was delighted to do. There are so many artists I’d die to work with and I just can’t pick one.”
Minna
“If you could direct a music video for “A Lovers’ Waltz,” what would the video look like?
“That’s actually a good question. It’s something I’ve never thought of, but it could’ve taken place in a winter wonderland, or somewhere snowy and white to match the vibe of the song.”
Minna
“Where do you see yourself one year from now? What do you hope to achieve?”
” My goal is to release more songs for my fans to relate to. I don’t think that this one single would be enough to introduce myself and about who I am. I will continue working on new pieces and do the best I can to express myself in the way I intend to.”
