Korean girl group Red Velvet, which first debuted on August 1st, 2014, released their EP ‘Cosmic’ on June 24th, 2024. ‘Cosmic’ commemorates the band’s 10th anniversary of their debut. The extended play presents six new Korean songs, including a lead single of the same name.

Red Velvet is a group known for their quirky, yet sinister concepts and distinct fantastical sound throughout its discography, something which differentiates their 10-year career. The lead single of this EP, “Cosmic”, is not an exception to the whimsical signature as a funky dance-pop song with elements of disco and synth strings. The track narrates an otherworldly love story that begins with a stranger crash-landing into Red Velvet and being encouraged to stay with them. This story describes the relationship between Red Velvet and their fans, Reveluv.
B-Sides
‘Cosmic’ contains five more songs alongside the title track. The first of these b-sides is “Sunflower”, the lyrics of which continue the themes of a captivating, celestial love. This dance-pop track portrays the group’s members as a sunflower hypnotized by their love of the sun, as real sunflowers always turn to face the sun. “Sunflower” is followed by the R&B track “Last Drop”, in which Red Velvet promises to give their all for their fans until “the last drop”.
The fourth track, “Love Arcade”, is an upbeat and bubbly song that suggests to the listener that they and the members should rewrite the rules of their love to follow their hearts. The fifth track, “Bubble”, is synth-pop with dazzling retro vibes. “Bubble” reflects the pure brightness of the listener against a dark, noisy universe.
Finally, the last song on ‘Cosmic’, “Night Drive”, is a dreamy R&B medium-tempo track featuring soothing synth tones and the honey vocals of Red Velvet. “Night Drive” recalls the reminiscent feelings shared between Reveluvs and Red Velvet throughout their 10-year companionship. The song dwells on nostalgia and expresses affection toward the group’s listeners. In the end, they look forward to the unknown future with Reveluv, a fate that was planned within the cosmos.
