WayV, also known as WeiShen V (威神V), is a six-member group and the Chinese sub-unit of NCT (Neo Culture Technology). Since their debut back in 2019, the group has been showing their versatile and dynamic musical colors through their extraordinary album releases, the latest being the long-awaited ‘Phantom’ mini-album released last December 2022 after their one-year hiatus. Now, they have recently announced their next full-length album ‘On My Youth’ to be released on November 8, 2023. So while we eagerly wait for new music from WayV, let’s take a look at the rest of their discography.
Powerful title tracks are a staple in WayV’s discography, and their discography as a whole has gems such as their most popular song that they are widely known for, Love Talk. However, there are a couple of other wonderful gems in their discography that deserve as much love as their more popular counterparts that can be found in their past albums.
Back To You
Apart from WayV’s powerful and energetic tracks, there are tracks that also hold so much emotion and sentimentality. From their ‘Phantom’ Album, WayV’s sub-unit, WayV-KUN&XIAOJUN has a wistful ballad track called “Back To You.” Here, Kun and Xiaojun sing about reminiscing about an old love, comparing it to a love that used to burn so bright and the complicated emotions when the fire of their love dies down. They desperately want to hold on, and in the end, after going through dark days, there is some hope that maybe they could start over and try again. In both the English and Chinese versions, the song is both heartbreaking and nostalgic, with a sentimental piano melody and string instruments paired with Kun and Xiaojun’s beautiful voices that carry the heartache and longing that they sing about.
Horizon
Another notable mention from WayV’s beautiful ballads is “Horizon” from their third mini album ‘Kick Back’. This warm and sentimental track is about yearning to see a loved one who is far from reach. However, there is hope to see each other as wishes are made to reunite. “Horizon” has beautiful metaphors with the main ones being that these lovers separated by distance are like the sky and sea. Even if the sky and sea are separated, there is hope to meet each other at the horizon where the sky and sea can touch. Kun, Xiaojun and Ten’s sentimental and powerful voices carry this hope. Along with the uplifting piano and string instruments medley that complement the song well. The song itself feels like a warm and comforting hug like how the sky and the sea embrace at the horizon.
All For Love
WayV’s emotional tracks aren’t limited to just ballads. “All for love” is a trap R&B style song by all the members that depicts both the chaos and rebirth in letting go of a past love in order to move forward. At its core, this track from the ‘Kick Back’ album talks about convincing oneself that all this pain is worth it in the name of love. It is like a mantra or a belief, one that they desperately repeat in the chorus where they try to rationalize the suffering they go through for love that ultimately isn’t good for them. Here, WayV sings about trying to escape from hurtful memories and regrets from a past love. They work to overcome the pain, break free from the chains of the past, and grow towards a more hopeful future.
Only Human
The rap unit of WayV also showcases their sentimental and vulnerable side through “Only Human” from the ‘Turn Back Time’ album. In this Hip Hop and R&B track, Hendery, Yangyang, and Winwin lead with strong raps that complement the acoustic guitar and low synth sound. The song starts with wanting to get away from all the noise when people spread hurtful lies and rumors. Because of all the hate, it starts to make them insecure, making them doubt themselves and who they are. They ask for people to look at them kindly, and question how they could treat fellow humans badly when they’re only human. The song speaks out against hateful words thrown at them, and even though they’re beaten and bruised, the only thing to do is get back up again. They face the harsh reality bravely, working to grow stronger than the people who wished for their downfall.
King of Hearts
Lastly, “King of Hearts” from WayV’s earlier album ‘Take Over The Moon’ is a medium-tempo R&B song that has a sad and mellow atmosphere. In this track, WayV sings about how the distance between them and their loved ones won’t stop how much they desire to be with them. The song’s lyrics talk about how deeply they have fallen for their loved one to the point of no escape. WayV’s delicate yet sensual voices creep into your heart, showing their sincerity in seriously pursuing their loved one. They pour their hearts out for their loved ones, wanting to be their one and only King of Hearts who promises to love and cherish them wholeheartedly.
