[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Summer Soul Talks ‘Dear . R’ and Love

Summer Soul is an independent R&B singer based in South Korea. She embarked on her musical journey in 2015 when she first shared her music with the world on Soundcloud. Since then her artistry has not only evolved but has also captured the hearts of a rapidly expanding fan base. With the release of ‘Dear. R,’ we got the chance to talk with Summer Soul about her career, love for music, and excitement for her upcoming concert!

“Can you introduce yourself to those who aren’t familiar with you yet?”

“Hi, guys! I’m Summer Soul from South Korea. I do music based on R&B but I can be an all-rounder and sing different genres at any time! I’m really happy to meet you guys.”

“Where does your love and passion for music come from?”

“I think I have the DNA that loves music. I just started to love music from the moment I was born. So I had a rough idea that I wanted to be a singer and that idea hasn’t changed ever since.”

“For people who may listen to your music after seeing this interview, can you give us a song of yours that you recommend they start with?”

“I think they should start with a song “How Beautiful” or “Barefoot.” I can say that these are the classic sounds from Summer Soul. Now my style has become more refined, but in the beginning my music was kinda rough and people loved it. So I think people should know where my music style has started from.”

“As someone with many producing and songwriting credits under their belt, tell us about the creative process behind these songs.”

“I don’t think I’m too special but whenever I produce music, I try not to have a reference to the new creation. So the point of this process is to start with a blank sheet. I try to empty my brain and make many options for me to choose next.”

“How does being an independent artist contribute to your creative freedom in your music?”

“I heard from the artists who is under control of their labels that they always have to get confirmation before they release any albums. They might interfere and say the music isn’t commercial enough. But as an independent artist, nobody is involved in the process of working so I can literally do anything with my music and I think that’s why people love my music so much.”

“What is a short-term or long-term goal you wish to achieve in your career?”

“My short-term goal is to become all the rage for music and my long-term goal is to be a long-run artist who can stay consistent and modest.”

“It’s been a while since your last release, tell us about ‘Dear . R’ and how this comeback is different from the others?”

“Firstly, “Ride” was written together with Jueun, who used to be in a girl group called Dia. I thought she was someone who lived a very different life from me when I first met her. But after spending a couple of years together, we found out that we are very similar to each other as we both had lonely and hard times in our own particular way. So I wanted to tell the story of our convergence and growth between the two of us. 

Speaking about ‘Ruby’, whenever I was in a relationship with someone, I found out that I was really into love and it was very important for me. So sometimes I get obsessed with love. I realized that the real side of love is not as beautiful as I thought. So I wanted to talk about greed and the unpleasant side of love that everyone who has been in love before would have experienced at least once. “

“You’re also holding a solo concert in October, what are you most excited about for this concert?”

“I have prepared lots of events for my fans exclusively shown just for this concert and so excited to have Jueun as the main guest. It’s going to be a real fun! I hope people don’t miss this one and only chance.”
